Sign dedicated to fallen Phoenix police officer to be unveiled Wednesday

PHOENIX — One year after Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge was shot and killed in the line of duty, a historic marker will be unveiled in his honor, officials announced Tuesday.

The ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the site of the shooting, on the south side of 16th Street near McDowell Road in Phoenix.

McDowell Road will close between 16th and 17th streets for the ceremony at 7 p.m. It is expected to reopen by 9 p.m., according to Phoenix police.

Coolidge’s sign will be the 43rd hung around Phoenix to honor fallen police officers. A list of the markers and the locations can be found on the Phoenix Police Department’s website.

Details on 2024 shooting that killed Phoenix Officer Zane Coolidge

On Sept. 3, 2024, Coolidge and another Phoenix police officer, Matthew Haney, responded to the area of 16th Street and McDowell Road due to a report of a car theft.

The officers approached a suspect, Saul Bal, who ran away and jumped over a fence.

Bal allegedly shot at the officers when they chased after him.

Both Coolidge and Haney were shot and taken to Banner University Medical Center.

Coolidge died three days later. Haney was discharged from the hospital one day after being shot.

Bal was taken into custody by officers at the scene. He was later indicted on several charges, including first-degree murder.
