PHOENIX — The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to help solve a case that has been cold for more than three decades.

Cathy Sposito was found brutally murdered along a popular hiking area near Prescott in June 1987, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Monday.

She had been hiking on the Thumb Butte Trail west of Prescott and around 7 a.m. on June 13, rode her mountain bike to the trailhead and began hiking up the path, authorities said.

Other hikers in the area heard screams for help but no one could reach Sposito in time and her body was found a short time later, authorities said.

“We will never stop seeking justice for the victims of violent crime,” Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes said in the release.

“New technology and new information make these cases more solvable than ever.”

People who provide information that leads to an arrest in the case could earn up to a $10,000 reward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232 or submit a tip on the Silent Witness website.

All tips are anonymous, authorities said.

We want to hear from you.
