Arizona motorist arrested for playing dangerous driving game called ‘Lunatic’

A motorist is in legal trouble after state troopers caught him playing a dangerous game of wrong-way driving on an Arizona freeway.

The driver said he was playing a game called “Lunatic” after troopers pulled him over Sunday on Interstate 40 west of Winslow, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was arrested on suspicion of endangerment and reckless driving, DPS said.

Troopers responded to the area after multiple callers reported seeing an SUV heading west in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the State Route 99 interchange.

The troopers intercepted the vehicle, stopped it safely and took the driver into custody.

Driver told troopers about ‘Lunatic’ game

The driver said he was playing “Lunatic” – a game where participants drive the wrong way on highways — with two other people who were not identified. He said he was the game’s supervisor because he was the oldest player, according to DPS.

A post on the AZDPS Highway Patrol Facebook page has the following warning about dangerous driving games:

No amount of ‘fun’ is worth risking your life or others’. Wrong-way driving can be deadly, and we’re glad troopers were able to cut their game short. Thank you to the citizens who called 911 to report this dangerous driving! Be smart and don’t fall for trends that put your safety at risk.
