Suspect in deadly wrong-way crash in Phoenix jailed after getting out of hospital

PHOENIX – A Phoenix man who allegedly caused a deadly wrong-way crash earlier this month was released from the hospital and taken to jail Monday, authorities said.

Joseph Rollins, 44, was booked for second-degree murder and a probation violation, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).

His bond was set at $400,000.

Emma Huckleberry, 21, of Waddell was killed in the Aug. 11 wrong-way crash on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway west of Priest Drive in Phoenix.

What do we know about deadly wrong-way crash?

The incident started just after midnight when a Subaru SUV was spotted traveling east on westbound Loop 202 near 24th Street.

The SUV eventually sideswiped a Hyundai passenger vehicle before crashing head-on into a Kia passenger vehicle and rolling over onto its roof, DPS said.

Huckleberry, who was driving the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rollins allegedly was driving the wrong-way Subaru. He was hospitalized afterward with unspecified injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

The Hyundai, meanwhile, was abandoned by its driver, who fled the scene, DPS said.
