Wrong-way accident shuts down Interstate 17 near Phoenix

PHOENIX — Four people were seriously injured in a wrong-way accident that shut down Interstate 17 South about 40 miles north of Phoenix, early Tuesday.

Authorities said a passer-by pulled the victims from the wreckage.

The head-on collision stopped traffic near Sunset Point around 2:45 a.m. The road reopened at 6:30 a.m.

Crews are on scene of a wrong way driver collision on I-17 at MP 251 SB. Please avoid the area.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the cars had caught fire and were burning intensely by the time they arrived.

Two people were flown to hospitals for treatment and another two were also hospitalized.
