Work begins Monday on downtown Chandler’s holiday Tumbleweed Tree

PHOENIX — Chandler Parks employees will begin work Monday on the city’s 62nd holiday Tumbleweed Tree.

The crews will attach between 600 and 800 tumbleweeds they’ve been collecting since October to a wire frame over the next two weeks.

Next they will spray the 35-foot tree with 50 gallons of flame retardant, 45 gallons of white paint and 70 pounds of glitter.

Finally, they will add 1,200 holiday lights in preparation for the parade and lighting ceremony on Dec. 1.

The crews will work on the tree on weekdays at Dr. A.J. Chandler park along Arizona Avenue.

The tradition began in 1957, according to a press release, when a city resident proposed the idea based on a similar tree he saw in Indiana.

Chandler is the only Southwestern city to display a tumbleweed tree, according to the release.
