PHOENIX — A popular recreation area is likely to remain closed through the Fourth of July holiday as the Woodbury Fire continues to burn east of Phoenix.
Apache Lake, campgrounds, picnic sites and trailheads are not expected to open by Thursday’s holiday because of the fire, according to a press release.
State Route 88, the access road to Apache Lake, also remains closed from Tortilla Flat to State Highway 188 at Theodore Roosevelt Dam.
The closure is expected to be a long-term closure beyond the holiday weekend.
Despite the closures, the state’s fifth-largest fire in history has been fairly stagnant recently.
Containment reached 80% as of Monday night and was nearing 124,000 acres burned.
The Woodbury Fire passed the Willow to crack the state’s top five fires last Tuesday when it reached 123,263 acres burned.
