Woman drowns in flash flood in wash near Phoenix

Authorities near Phoenix said a woman drowned in a flash flood Monday night trying to reach safety from a truck trapped in a wash.

PHOENIX – Authorities near Phoenix said a woman drowned in a flash flood Monday trying to reach safety from a truck trapped in a wash.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office said Catherine Canez, 52, of Miami, Arizona, was carried downstream in the Irene Wash north of Globe.

Her companion, Richard Weaver, 45, of Globe, made it out of the truck.

The sheriff’s office said the 911 call came in shortly before 8 p.m.

Warnings for flash floods and severe thunderstorms had been issued for the area, ahead of an expected monsoon storm.

Storms dropped half an inch of rain or more on some parts of Maricopa County, particularly in the East Valley.

Another flash flood watch was in effect for the Globe area Tuesday from 3 p.m. until midnight.
