Woman, dog die in Glendale apartment fire; at least 1 injured

PHOENIX – A woman was killed in a fire that broke out at a Glendale apartment complex early Monday.

A dog also died in the 2:30 a.m. blaze in two units near 51st and Northern avenues, the fire department said in an email.

Crews were called to the apartments by the residents of the unit directly above the fire. They told first responders they smelled smoke and that the fire was spreading to their home.

Glendale Fire said the fire had engulfed the first and second floors of the apartments and was blocking the exits.

Four people and two dogs were pulled out of the burning ground-floor apartment. Heather Marie Williams, who was badly burned and had inhaled a great deal of smoke, died at the scene.

A young man was taken to a hospital in critical condition with burns on 44% of his body. Authorities said Wednesday he was put into a medically induced coma while he heals.

Two people and another dog were able to escape unharmed.

Nearly a dozen residents were displaced, the fire department said.

Cause of the fire was under investigation.
