Woman dies after early morning hit-and-run in east Phoenix

A woman died after being hit by a car while crossing a street in east Phoenix on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The Phoenix Police Department identified the woman who died as 40-year-old Jennifer Knephfler.
Officers were called to the area of 24th and Van Buren streets for reports of someone laying in the roadway around 5 a.m. and found Knephfler east of the intersection near a business’s driveway and partially unconscious.
She was taken with serious injuries to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Preliminary information indicated that Knephfler was struck by a possibly dark colored truck that was driving eastbound while crossing Van Buren Street.
The truck fled the scene before police arrived.
