Woman dead after firing at officers, barricading herself inside Casa Grande home

A barricaded subject investigation in Casa Grande ended Saturday morning after a woman shot at police officers before taking her own life inside a residence, authorities said.

Officers with the Casa Grande Police Department responded around 5:48 a.m. to a report of a disturbance at a home near the 1300 block of West Orchid Place, located near Gila Bend Highway and Burris Road.

A caller inside the residence reported that a family member was acting erratically, armed with a handgun, and threatening to shoot people. The caller had locked themselves inside a separate room for safety.

When patrol officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified only as a 49-year-old woman, fired at least one shot toward responding officers. No officers were hit by the gunfire.

As initial officers backed away from the front of the home, another officer helped the caller safely escape through a rear window.

After confirming the armed woman was the only person left inside, authorities activated the Pinal Regional S.W.A.T. Team.

Negotiators attempted to establish communication with the woman, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

S.W.A.T. personnel eventually breached the front door and deployed an interior drone to search the house. Officers using the drone located the woman dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No other injuries were reported.

Detectives remained at the scene Saturday to gather evidence. The investigation remains active and ongoing, police said.
