Mescal Fire burning east of Phoenix passes 50,000 acres

PHOENIX – A wildfire fire burning far east of Phoenix continues to increase in size as hot weather and winds push the flames farther, officials said.

The Mescal Fire has roared through 52,887 acres near Globe, Carrie Templin, spokeswoman for Southwest Area Incident Management Team, told KTAR News 92.3 FM early Monday.

No injuries have been reported.

Containment was 8%.

The fire jumped from 38,000 acres Sunday, according to InciWeb, a wildfire information website run by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.

Authorities said 674 personnel were working the blaze on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.

Evacuation orders were issued for Coyote Flats; orders remained in place for El Capitan on the east side of State Route 77, which is closed between Winkleman and U.S. 70, and Soda Canyon.

The fire started burning June 1, the Bureau of Land Management said in a press release.
