1 man dead, 1 taken into custody after west Phoenix shooting

A fatal west Phoenix shooting over the weekend left a 28-year-old man dead and a 43-year-old man arrested, police announced Tuesday.

PHOENIX — A man is dead after a west Phoenix shooting over the weekend, authorities announced Tuesday.

Edward Sanchez, 43, was arrested in connection to the shooting, which took place around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The victim, 28-year-old Gabriel Soto Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene near 52nd Drive and Hubbell Street, which is near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road, police said.

After Sanchez was arrested, he admitted to his involvement but claimed he shot Hernandez in self-defense, according to police.

He was booked on multiple charges, including murder.

No further details were made available.

This is an ongoing investigation.
