Weekend wrap-up: Here are the biggest Arizona stories from April 10-12

New coronavirus cases and deaths continue to rise in Arizona, the Arizona Department of Health Services releases enhanced information on COVID-19 patients and a Chinese American company helps supply Arizona with personal protective equipment.

Here are some stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.

Arizona reports 3,539 coronavirus cases, seven more deaths

The Arizona health department reported an increase of 146 positive coronavirus tests and seven deaths in its daily report Sunday morning.

The state’s totals during the COVID-19 outbreak are now 3,539 cases and 115 deaths, with 42,109 tests given.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has been providing daily case and testing updates on its website each morning.

Arizona releases location, death information on coronavirus cases

The Arizona Department of Health Services on Sunday released enhanced information on confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths throughout the state.

The website where new information has been released daily around 9 a.m. has three new tabs: COVID-19 Deaths in Arizona, COVID-19 Zipcode Map and Hospital COVID-like-illness Surveillance.

The zip code map links out to a map of the state of Arizona with different colors showing the number of positive cases. The colors start at 0 and then go up in increments of 5 before the darker red color equals “greater than 10.” A county with gray means “data suppressed.”

Arizona releases details on age, race and ethnicity of coronavirus deaths

Of Arizona’s confirmed 115 COVID-19 deaths, 63% were male and 37% were female, according to the AZDHS website.

The coronavirus has hit Arizona’s elderly community the hardest, with 78% of the deaths afflicting those 65 and older.

There have been 24 deaths in the 55-64 age bracket, 12 deaths in the 45-54 age bracket and only one death between those aged 20 to 44.

Newly released Arizona coronavirus information shows death by county

Maricopa County had 48 deaths as of Sunday afternoon. Pima County had 29 and Coconino had 19.

Navajo County had eight deaths, Pinal County had four and no other county in Arizona had more than three deaths.

Five counties have not had a single death.

Arizona releases new data on availability of hospital beds, ventilators

New information on the AZDHS website shows the state’s number of available hospital beds and ventilators compared to how many patients are currently using them, as well as other COVID-19 specific data.

As of Sunday, over 4,400 people were recorded as inpatients, while over 1,000 patients required Intensive Care Unit beds and over 360 Arizonans have been put on ventilators.

Those metrics leave the state with an availability of over 900 ICU beds and over 1,100 ventilators for patients.

Chinese American group supplies 100,000 masks to Arizona hospitals

Much needed personal protective equipment to fight the coronavirus outbreak is coming as 100,000 masks will be delivered to Arizona hospitals thanks to the fundraising efforts of a Chinese American community.

Chinese American COVID-19 Relief AZ raised nearly $48,400 from 285 donors on a GoFundMe page to buy protective masks for health care workers and others at high risk.

The total amount raised surpassed $75,000 due to companies matching fundraising efforts, according to Susan Liu who organized the fundraiser.

Goodwill to reopen select career centers, retail stores

Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona has reopened four career centers and intends to open select retail stores over the course of the next three weeks, the organization announced in a press release on Friday.

Goodwill is considered an essential business under Gov. Doug Ducey’s Stay-At-Home order.

The four career centers’ hours of operation will be on various days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
