Mesa City Council approves formation of Palo District in attempt to bring new stadium to Mesa
The Mesa City Council voted unanimously to approve the formation of the Palo District on Wednesday in an attempt to bring an MLS and NWSL team to Mesa.
The Palo District will be what’s referred to as a “theme park district” located on the old 80-acre Fiesta Mall site. Demolition of the old mall began in 2023, and the site located near Southern Avenue and Alma School Road has been vacant since 2019.
Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman told 12News that the city is in pursuit of both a Major League Soccer team and a National Women’s Soccer League team.
Legal experts doubt the Pentagon can punish Mark Kelly for ‘illegal orders’ video
The Pentagon’s investigation of Sen. Mark Kelly over a video that urges American troops to defy “illegal orders” has raised a slew of questions, and some criticism, from legal experts.
Some say the Pentagon is misreading military law to go after Kelly as a retired Navy fighter pilot. Others say the Arizona Democrat cannot be prosecuted as a member of Congress. A group of former military prosecutors insists he did nothing wrong.
The Pentagon announced the investigation last week after President Donald Trump’s social media post accusing Kelly — and the five other Democratic lawmakers in the video — of sedition “punishable by DEATH.”
US halts all asylum decisions after shooting of National Guard members
The Trump administration has halted all asylum decisions and paused issuing visas for people traveling on Afghan passports, seizing on the National Guard shooting in Washington to intensify efforts to rein in legal immigration.
The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting near the White House that killed Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and critically wounded Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, both of the West Virginia National Guard, is facing charges including first-degree murder. Investigators are seeking to find a motive for the attack.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal is a 29-year-old Afghan national who worked with the CIA during the Afghanistan War. He applied for asylum during the Biden administration and was granted it this year under President Donald Trump, according to a group that assists with resettlement of Afghans who helped U.S. forces in their country.
The Republican administration is promising to pause entry to the United States from some poor nations and review Afghans and other legal migrants already in the country.
2 men dead after motorcyclist fight leads to shots fired, man hit by car near Phoenix highway
A fight between two motorcyclists led to gunshots and a man getting hit by a car near a Phoenix highway on Friday night.
Phoenix police responded to a crash involving two motorcyclists near 7th Avenue and Interstate 17 just before 11 p.m., authorities said.
While officers were on their way to the site of the crash, they learned the two motorcycle riders had gotten into a fight that led to a shooting.
The motorcyclist who fired the shots was then hit by a vehicle, according to police.
St. Mary’s Food Bank distributes Thanksgiving supplies to record number of Arizona families
After three days of service wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon, St. Mary’s Food Bank supplied a record number of families food for the Thanksgiving holiday, the nonprofit announced.
Around 12:45 p.m. the last car left the distribution center in Phoenix with meal essentials — “a turkey, holiday food box and produce bag” — and 11,876 families were served at the food bank’s Phoenix and Surprise locations.
Adding in the other centers’ haul across Arizona, St. Mary’s and its 250 employees, plus, more than 2,000 volunteers, served a record 25,523 families.
