PHOENIX — From a historic heat wave rolling through the Valley to a new 24-hour cannabis dispensary and more, here are some of the top Arizona news stories from March 20-22.

Another daily heat record reset in Phoenix, temperature reaches 100 for 5th straight day

A historically hot March rolled on in Phoenix, as the city saw another daily heat record re-written Sunday.

The mercury at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for official readings, hit 95 degrees at 12:07 p.m. to blow by the previous record of 94 degrees established in 1990.

Phoenix has now seen triple-digit temperatures five straight days, as it reached the 100-degree mark at 2:01 p.m. and as high as 102 degrees before cooling down.

Body found floating in Tempe Town Lake

A body was found floating in Tempe Town Lake on Saturday morning.

A witness saw the body floating in the lake and called the police, according to the Tempe Police Department.

The Tempe PD and Fire Department arrived at the scene and pulled the body, believed to be a male between 20 and 30 years old, out of the water.

Scottsdale mayor’s chief of staff fired following 65-day investigation

Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky’s chief of staff was fired Friday following a 65-day investigation.

Borowsky was informed by city management of the decision to terminate her top aide, R. Lamar Whitmer.

“To be clear, I do not condone inappropriate workplace conversations, did not witness them and would not tolerate them,” Borowsky said in a statement. “Furthermore, I fully believe workplace rules should be followed, public trust should never be abused and this has been fully communicated to my staff.”

The mayor added that she hopes Whitmer’s replacement will be allowed to fulfill chief of staff responsibilities, including speaking with city staff.

Mint Cannabis opening East Mesa dispensary with 24-hour drive-thru, will donate to United Food Bank

Mint Cannabis will have the grand opening of its new dispensary in East Mesa next Saturday, and will donate $1,000 to United Food Bank during its ribbon-cutting.

The new dispensary will be located near North Power Street and Akron Road, and the grand opening will go from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The East Mesa location will be Mint Cannabis‘ ninth Arizona location and only one of a few in the state to operate 24/7.

Man arrested for DUI, reckless driving near Luke Air Force Base

A man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and reckless driving near Luke Air Force Base on Saturday, authorities said.

According to the Glendale Police Department, the man was speeding near the Air Force base at Northern Avenue and Litchfield Road.

Glendale police said the man was wearing what appeared to be a ballistic vest, but authorities later determined it was not one.
