Arizona leaders react to shooting at White House correspondents’ dinner

Arizona leaders shared their reactions after a shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night.

U.S. Rep. Abe Hamadeh was at the dinner and posted a video thanking his senior law enforcement advisor for getting him and two other congressmen, Reps. Marlin Stutzman (Indiana) and Andy Ogles (Tennessee), to safety. Stutzman appeared alongside Hamadeh and described the moment gunshots went off.

“All of a sudden, like 50 to 75 feet over my left shoulder, gunshots go off and we all just jumped underneath the table,” Stutzman said. “But everybody is safe that were around me and obviously very scared and concerned.”

Conservation groups accuse US Forest Service of illegally rounding up wild horses in Arizona

A national wild horse advocacy group is putting the U.S. Forest Service on notice, demanding an immediate halt to the removal of wild horses from the Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona.

Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation, joined by Front Range Equine Rescue and The Gila Herd Foundation of Arizona, fired off a letter to officials on Friday, alleging the agency is bypassing federal law to clear the range.

At the center of the dispute is the agency’s classification of the horses as “unauthorized livestock.” The advocacy groups argue the label is a strategic, and legally flawed, maneuver to strip the animals of protections guaranteed under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

Firefighters have contained landfill fire in Surprise that sparked Friday

A fire that erupted at a landfill and recycling plant in Surprise on Friday has been contained, and Surprise fire and medical personnel are no longer at the scene, authorities said.

Crews were able to contain the fire after about 48 hours of operations, and the department will continue to monitor the situation.

The fire and medical personnel prevented the flames from spreading to any surrounding homes or businesses, and all hot spots have been completely extinguished, authorities said.

43-year-old driver shot, killed after allegedly hitting multiple cars in north Phoenix

A 43-year-old driver was shot and killed early Saturday morning after he allegedly hit multiple parked cars in north Phoenix, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department identified the deceased man as Bruce Roanhorse.

Officers were called to the area of Seventh Street and Dunlap Avenue for reports of a crash just before 4 a.m., police said.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Roanhorse suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The Phoenix Fire Department responded and pronounced Roanhorse dead.

Woman left with life-threatening injuries after being hit by train in west Phoenix

A woman was hospitalized after she was hit by a train in west Phoenix on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The woman was struck in the area of 27th Avenue and Thomas Road just after 9 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.
