Website’s study rates Arizona No. 18 in patriotism

PHOENIX — When it comes to patriotism, Arizona is better than some states but not as terrific as others.

The Grand Canyon State finished 18th in personal-finances website WalletHub’s recent study with a score of 52.84.

Arizona ranked best in military engagement at No. 13.

The study relied on two elements — military engagement and civic engagement. Those were broken down further into 13 metrics. Military engagement metrics included the average number of enlistees per 1,000 civilian adults (from 2011 to 2016) and active-duty personnel per 100,000 adults.

Civic engagement metrics included share of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election, volunteerism, jury participation and frequency of Google searches for the American flag.

Each element was worth 50 points.

Virginia earned the top spot with a score of 70.48. Massachusetts was last at 26.60.

A WalletHub study released in May rated Arizona No. 26 of best states for military retirees.
