Waste Management opens 13-acre training center in Glendale

PHOENIX — Waste Management opened a 13-acre driver and technician training facility in Glendale on Thursday.

The property near Camelback Road and U.S. 60 (Grand Avenue) includes a 10-acre driver training course and 30,000-square-foot maintenance shop, as well as classrooms, computer labs and work stations that simulate hauling facilities.

About 2,500 employees in the Houston-based company’s training program will come to the center each year.

Waste Management CEO John Morris told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the facility, the company’s second in the U.S., has already started offering classes.

“What we do is we take folks with varying levels of experience … (and) put them through a pretty rigorous two-week program and teach them the way we’d like them to operate in their respective role,” he said.

“Having a commercial driver’s license is one thing. Knowing how to operate one of our vehicles, which are obviously complicated, is a lot of what we work on here.”

The company sponsors the annual Waste Management Open in Phoenix, which brought in more than $13.2 million for Arizona charities this year.
