Alleged ASU bathroom voyeur arrested, tells police he took secret videos for years

A 33-year-old Mesa resident was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of taking video of men inside bathrooms at Arizona State University, according to court records.

Christopher Michael Sutherland was booked into jail on felony counts of burglary, voyeurism and unlawful recording as well as a misdemeanor trespassing charge. His bond was set at $50,000.

Sutherland allegedly told police he had been coming to the Tempe campus for years to take footage of men using the restrooms.

An ASU police spokesperson said Sutherland is not affiliated with the university.

What led up to arrest of ASU voyeurism suspect?

The case began Tuesday when patrol officers responded to a call about suspicious activity in a bathroom at the Noble Library on Tyler Mall.

A victim said he was in a bathroom stall when he saw a phone being held over the wall, according to the probable cause statement for Sutherland’s arrest. The victim confronted the person with the phone, who was identified later as Sutherland, and took his photo.

Sutherland left the area before officers arrived, but the victim told them which way he went. Police were able to track down the suspect and detain him at ASU’s business college.

After being read his rights, Sutherland let the officers see the contents of his phone, which contained videos of the victim inside a bathroom stall. Additionally, the victim was brought to where Sutherland was detained and identified him as the person he confronted.

The suspect also agreed to be interviewed. According to the arrest report, he said he went to ASU Tuesday morning with the intention of secretly taking videos of men in the bathroom.

He told police he took video of multiple people in the men’s bathrooms at the business college and Noble Library before he was caught.

Furthermore, he acknowledged going to ASU about once a month for the past five years to take restroom videos, saying he used the footage to stimulate himself sexually.
