Man drove car into tanker in Glendale hoping it would blow up, police say

PHOENIX – A man who wanted to kill himself drove his vehicle into a tanker in Glendale thinking it would blow up on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Joushua Denton, 27, drove his vehicle into the large tanker near 57th Avenue and Camelback Road around 8:30 a.m., according to the Glendale Police Department.

When the tanker didn’t blow up, Denton began lighting his car on fire, police said. Denton then charged at officers hoping they would shoot him, police added.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody. No shooting occurred, according to police.

Although the integrity of the tank was compromised, the incident didn’t pose an active threat to the public, police said.

Denton was hospitalized briefly before being taken to jail.

He faces charges of arson, aggravated assault, endangerment and criminal damage.

Camelback Road remained closed in both directions between 55th and 59th avenues while hazmat crews worked to contain the chemicals.
