PHOENIX – A vehicle fire backed up Phoenix-area freeway traffic for miles Monday morning and was expected to trap commuters for more than two hours.
A burning vehicle on northbound Interstate 17 shut down the ramp to eastbound Loop 101 around 7:15 a.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
Delays began building near 51st Avenue.
Major congestion broke up by around 10 a.m.
Initially, the fire restricted lanes but the reduced visibility led officials to close the ramp.
