PHOENIX — Residents and visitors of Avondale can now walk or jog along a new multi-use path in the city that was completed on Monday, officials announced.

The project, part of the overall multimodal trail system Avondale is developing, runs about 1.75 miles in length between 113th and 127th avenues on the north side of Van Buren Street.

Constructed by the Arizona Department of Transportation, the trail includes sidewalks, lighting, irrigations systems, landscaping and artistic elements.

About $2.4 million from federal funds was used to finish the $4.2 million project that is part of a long-term project intended to further the Maricopa County multimodal trail system.

“The vision for the future of the path is that it will connect to the Agua Fria River pathways and connect you to the Tres Rios Nature area where it will link up along the Gila River and create routes for connectivity to other communities, such as Phoenix, Goodyear and Buckeye,” Bryan Hughes, parks and recreation director for the city of Avondale, said in a press release.

The city has committed to building new primary trails along the Agua Fria River corridor and connecting missing links of residential area trails to the primary trail corridor alongside Agua Fria River, the release said.
