PHOENIX – A woman who drove her SUV into a West Valley ditch while taking six kids trick-or-treating Wednesday faces felony DUI charges, authorities said.
Officers on a Halloween safety detail found the vehicle driven by 41-year-old Veronica Lee King in a ditch near Miller and Baseline roads at around 8:30 p.m., according to the Buckeye Police Department.
Five of the kids were under 10 years old.
King was jailed on suspicion of five counts of aggravated DUI and one count of having an open container of alcohol.
Police notified the Arizona Department of Child Safety.
King showed a number of signs of impairment, police said, including bloodshot and watery eyes, swaying, slurred speech and having a moderate odor of alcohol.
Preliminary breath tests determined King had a blood-alcohol level of 0.165 percent, more than twice the legal limit for Arizona drivers.
