Valley student’s sloth art picked for national Google Doodle contest

PHOENIX – A West Valley high school student is in the running to have her illustration featured in a Google Doodle.

Ella Kinnersley, a ninth grader at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, won the internet giant’s Arizona contest to earn a national finals spot, according to a Dysart Unified School District press release.

Ella’s artwork is titled “Sloths are Neato.” The annual contest’s theme this year is “When I grow up, I hope …”.

“When I grow up I hope to be the proud owner of a sloth sanctuary,” says Ella’s entry, which is in the 8-9 grade group. “Since sloths are now classified as an endangered species, I would like to see a world where their habitats aren’t being destroyed. I need to keep my good boys safe.”

Public online voting on the 53 state and territory winners ends Friday at 9 p.m. Arizona time.

The voting will determine five finalists, one from each grade group, which Google will announce later this month.

One of the finalists will be selected to be featured on Google’s homepage for a day.

The national winner will also earn a $30,000 college scholarship and the chance to name a charity to receive a $50,000 tech package.
