US 60/Grand closed in Glendale through morning rush hour after hit-and-run fatality

PHOENIX – U.S. 60/Grand Avenue was closed in the West Valley throughout morning rush hour Friday after a pedestrian was killed in an apparent hit-and-run, authorities said.

Police responded to a call about a possible pedestrian accident near Missouri Avenue in Glendale around 5 a.m.

“Officers located who they believe to be an adult female deceased on scene,” Tiffany Ngalula, a Glendale Police public information officer, said in an email. “Detectives are currently arriving to investigate if this was a vehicular accident.”

U.S. 60/Grand was closed in both directions between Bethany Home and Camelback roads until around 10:30 a.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

US 60 is CLOSED in both directions due to a crash at milepost 157 in Glendale.

Eastbound is closed at Bethany Home and westbound is closed at Camelback.

Expect delays and seek an alternate route.

After the closure was lifted, Ngalula said police believe the woman was hit by a vehicle that left the scene.

No other details were immediately available.

In another incident on U.S. 60 early Friday, the highway was closed about 35 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix after a fatal head-on collision in Wittman.

A pickup truck heading west in the eastbound lanes collided with a semi-truck at milepost 131 around 2:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. All closures related to the Wittman crash were lifted by around 9 a.m.

The driver of the pickup died and a passenger was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. The semi driver had minor injuries.

DPS said impairment is believed to be a factor.
