UMOM approved to begin construction on 192-unit affordable housing complex

UMOM New Day Centers has received final approval to break ground on Salamanca Square, a 192-unit affordable housing complex in Phoenix.

The development, which is located on 39th Avenue between Indian School and Dysart roads, is in partnership with the Alhambra School District and will serve families earning at or below 60% of the area median income.

Salamanca Square will feature apartment options ranging from one-bedroom, one-bathroom units to four-bedroom, two-bathroom units, and will create new revenue streams for residents and local schools.

“At a time when families are struggling to find affordable housing, we have a responsibility to use every available resource,” UMOM New Day Centers CEO Monique Lopez said. “Salamanca Square turns underutilized school district land into a pathway to stability — creating homes, strengthening neighborhoods and delivering real solutions where they’re needed most.”

This is the latest development in UMOM’s model of leveraging Low-Income Housing Tax Credit partnerships to transform underutilized land or buildings into family-centered communities. The nonprofit organization is the largest provider of emergency shelter in Arizona, with more than 900 units already in operation.

Construction on Salamanca Square will begin this fall, with completion anticipated in 2027.
