Umbrellas up, sweaters on: Phoenix area to get rain, cool temps this week

PHOENIX — Dig out your umbrellas, Phoenix. The Valley is expected to get some much-needed rain this week, as well as cooler temperatures.

Austin Jamison of the National Weather Service’s Phoenix Bureau said the showers and possible thunderstorms will begin Tuesday.

“In the metro area, we’re looking for a storm chance that’s going to ramp up during the day,” he told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

“So in the afternoon we’ll start to see some shower development, and then Tuesday night’s when we’ll see widespread rain across the metro.”

He said the Valley can expect to see 1-2 inches of rain through Friday, with higher-terrain areas possibly seeing more.

Today is the last warm, dry, mostly sunny day ahead of back-to-back storms this week.

We're talking 1-2 inches of rain in the Valley.
2-3 inches of rain in the higher terrain north and east of the Valley.
AND 2-5 inches of snow above 7,000 feet.

The rain is thanks to a “one-two punch,” he said, from one storm coming in from the Baja Coast and another down from the north.

A monsoon season ending with below-average rainfall in September left the Valley in need of rain.

With only 0.66 inches recorded compared to an average of 2.77, it was the fifth-driest monsoon season on record.

Along with the rain will come a big cooldown.

Jamison said Monday’s high was expected to be in the mid-80s.

“And by the time you get to Wednesday, we’re looking at highs in the 60s and those highs remain in the 60s the rest of the week,” he said.

Lows may drop into the low 50s and even upper 40s as the week goes on.
