Two vigils for synagogue shooting victims to be held Tuesday in Valley

Two vigils for the victims of Saturday's mass shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue have been scheduled for Tuesday night in the Phoenix area.

PHOENIX – Two vigils for the victims of Saturday’s mass shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue have been scheduled for Tuesday night in the Phoenix area.

A vigil for the 11 people killed at the Tree of Life Synagogue will be held from 7-9 p.m. outdoors at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center at 122 E. Culver St., near McDowell Road and Central Avenue.

Over in Scottsdale, the Valley of the Sun JCC is hosting an interfaith vigil at the facility’s Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus. It’s located at 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, between Cactus and Thunderbird roads. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The Phoenix event was organized by a former state lawmaker David Schapira.

“We will come together Tuesday to honor those who lost their lives on Saturday and to condemn all acts of hateful violence,” Schapira said in a press release.

“Our community will not stand idly by as anti-Semitism makes a resurgence in America.”

The Anti-Defamation League of Arizona, the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, Valley Interfaith Project, the Arizona Jewish Historical Society and Arizona Jews for Justice are co-hosting the Phoenix vigil.

The Scottsdale vigil is sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council in cooperation with the Jewish Community Foundation, Arizona Faith Network, Jewish Federation and The J.
