Two I-10 ramps to permanently close for South Mountain Freeway work

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is saying goodbye to two Interstate 10 ramps in west Phoenix to make room for a new interchange as part of the massive South Mountain Freeway project.

The eastbound off-ramp at 51st Avenue will be permanently closed at 8 p.m. Wednesday, and the eastbound on-ramp at 59th Avenue will be shut down for good at 8 p.m. Monday.

A new I-10 access road between 51st and 59th avenues, scheduled to be completed in July, will provide access in the area.

Multiple ramps between 51st and 67th avenues have been closed permanently or for construction while the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway is being built.

The new loop, which is scheduled to open in late 2019, will add 22 freeway miles connecting the East Valley with west Phoenix.
