Tucson mass vaccination site to gradually ramp up operations

PHOENIX — Arizona’s top public health official said the state’s third mass vaccination site, which opened Thursday, will gradually ramp us operations before reaching full capacity.

Arizona Department of Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ said the Tucson pod at the University of Arizona will administer between 600 and 1,200 shots a day to start.

Once the UArizona site reaches full capacity, depending on vaccine availability, it can serve up to 6,000 people per day.

All of the nearly 12,000 new appointments for the site were snapped up in about 2½ hours Tuesday morning.

The school had already been offering the vaccine to employees and students during the daytime.

State Farm Stadium in Glendale, the first state-run site, operates all day and all night.

Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the second state-run facility, is only open during the day. Each has the capacity to give 12,000 shots a day but are operating below that level because of short supply.
