Trader Joe’s to open another store in Tempe near ASU

PHOENIX – Grocery chain Trader Joe’s will join the Tempe shopping scene near Arizona State University fairly soon, according to a report.

ABC15 reported Friday the new store, the second in the East Valley city, would open in June.

The California-based company posted online in February the store would be at University Drive and Rural Road, in the Cornerstone strip mall.

The note read: “We’ve consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in ASU, AZ.” The company planned to update the page but didn’t say when.

The site will compete with a nearby Whole Foods that opened near ASU in November.

The TV station said a spokeswoman for the mall said the shop would take up 11,000 square feet in a space that had been occupied by an urgent care facility and an art-supplies retailer.

The chain also has Valley locations in Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Surprise.

Its first Tempe store is at McClintock Drive and Guadalupe Road, about 5 miles south of the new site.
