PHOENIX — Single-family homes could be going up in a Phoenix neighborhood near Grand Canyon University after the City Council signed off Wednesday on a rezoning application that bothers some homeowners.
The plans would put 28 three-story townhomes on the southeast corner of 31st and Glendale avenues, an empty 2.53-acre lot.
The Planning and Development Department said in a June analysis, “The proposal encourages redevelopment of an underutilized parcel to be compatible with the existing single-family residential in the immediate area.”
But some residents have told the city the homes will be a detriment to the neighborhood known as Alhambra Village.
In May, during the rezoning process, Paul Nunley wrote the planning agency and developers, Cryptomonde, “Would you want a 50′ or 60′ wall built the length of your back yard and beyond in both directions?”
He added he didn’t think anyone would answer “yes!” to the question and pointed out the likelihood of increased traffic becoming a problem.
Karol Harvey wrote the height of the townhomes “would be a real eyesore” and that the site’s limited parking would create more street parking.
Homeowner Daryl Lynch said the units would infringe on privacy because of their height.
The planning department noted the “proposal will provide additional housing options within Alhambra Village.”
