Thousands of ASU students prepare to move into dorms over weekend

PHOENIX — With the beginning of the school year right around the corner, thousands of ASU students are gearing up to move in this upcoming weekend, a daunting task that Tempe Police are working to make a little bit easier.

Molly Enright with Tempe Police said welcoming in the school year also means welcoming in thousands of out-of-state or international students who are unfamiliar with the area. In order to assist unfamiliar students and families with their transition, Tempe Police will increase police presence over the next few weeks.

“Every year the city of Tempe welcomes ASU students and their families back into our community,” Molly Enright with Tempe Police. “We have young people coming in from all across the world.”

Students who are coming in have different state traffic laws, or have been familiar with riding bicycles, or walking and the signal lights may be different from where they come from, she said.

“What we want to do is really remind the students not to jaywalk,” she said, “Also (we remind) drivers to be looking and aware when students might have earplugs in and might step out into in the street against a red light.”

Matthew Brown, executive director for housing and dining services at the university, said after housing several students in hotels last year due to overcrowding, this year’s incoming freshmen looking to live on campus  — 11,100, to be exact — will be guaranteed a room.

“Last year, we did have some students who stayed in hotels for the short-term until we could get some space open up on the main campus,” he said. “Fortunately that won’t be the case this year, we worked really hard to manage our inventory and worked with students to make sure everybody who had a room was coming to ASU.”

Brown said he and the rest of the staff at the university are looking forward to welcoming students and their families back to Arizona State this year.

“We’re just really excited to have everybody coming back for a wonderful year at ASU,” he said. “We’re excited to welcome students and their families back to campus.”
