Thieves steal puppies worth thousands from Phoenix-area pet store

PHOENIX — Police in Tempe said puppies worth a combined $30,000 were stolen from a mall pet store this week.

The five French bulldogs were snatched late Wednesday night from Animal Kingdom pet store at the Arizona Mills outlet shopping center. Three of the puppies were waiting to go to new homes.

Two suspects carried the dogs, all microchipped, out the store in a large plastic trash can to a gray car, Detective Liliana Duran said. The thieves likely got inside the building through a back door, she added.

The store, at Baseline Road near Interstate 10, was offering a $5,000 reward for the dogs’ safe return.

“We are growing very concerned as each day goes by for the health and safety of the puppies and we just want them back,” said Linda Nofer, the marketing director for Companion Pets Inc., the company that owns the pet store chain.

Police said they were taking tips at 480-350-8311 or online.
