Suspicious package at Yuma County jail being investigated for terrorism

A suspicious package delivered to the Yuma County Detention Center is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

PHOENIX — A suspicious package delivered to the Yuma County Detention Center is being investigated as an act of terrorism, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The package was duct taped with handwritten threats drawn on it. It was discovered staked into the ground next to an electrical box.

The Yuma Regional Bomb Squad was assigned to neutralize the package.

According to the release, the bomb squad x-rayed the package and confirmed it held items used to generate an improvised explosion.

After a perimeter was set, the package was destroyed with a controlled detonation and the area was rendered safe.
