Tempe Works expands jobs program with new coordinator position

PHOENIX — The city of Tempe announced an expansion of its jobs program with the hiring of a dedicated program coordinator.

The Tempe City Council approved funding earlier this year for the hiring of Lilliana Urenda for its program, which is designed to help homeless individuals find employment and access shelter and housing, according to a press release.

The city with the hiring of Urenda hopes to advance the program by increasing support for participants, connecting people to more workforce development opportunities and improving data collection to support upcoming decision making.

Participants in the program obtain employment in the city’s Solid Waste and Parks and Recreation area and Corporate Job Bank.

“Tempe Works offer a path out of homelessness when we combine employment with access to shelter, housing and social services,” Tempe Vice Mayor Randy Keating said in the release.

“This latest investment allows the city to assist more people who want to increase their self-sufficiency.”

Since being approved in 2017, Tempe Works has since served 41 participants.
