Tempe seeks partners for new attractions along shoreline of its prized man-made lake

PHOENIX – Would you like to operate a new recreational attraction along the shoreline of Tempe Town Lake?

If so, officials in the East Valley suburb want to hear from you.

Tempe is seeking partners who can bring new amenities to the area around its prized man-made lake, which draws over 2 million visitors annually.

Interested and qualified parties can submit proposals online through Aug. 1. The plans must be privately funded and include a revenue-sharing component.

What activities could be added at Tempe Town Lake?

When the community was asked for ideas in 2021, the top responses included a zipline, observation tower, rock wall, bungee jumping and an off-lake FlowRider surf pool.

After the current proposal window closes, the city will invite the public to provide feedback about the submissions.

The initiative is a continuation of the Rio Salado Master Plan, a roadmap for developing the Tempe Town Lake area between Priest Drive and Rural Road over the next 20-30 years.

The next steps are focused on adding outdoor athletic, recreation and adventure activities on the north side of the lake.

Last year, Tempe Beach Park celebrated its 25th anniversary. The lake and surrounding parks and trails have become popular spots for jogging, walking, biking and boating.
