Tempe rolls out police SUV with military colors to spark conversation

TEMPE, Arizona – The Tempe Police Department has unveiled the newest addition to its fleet, and it’s hard to miss.

It’s an SUV with a unique paint scheme that honors the military.

The vehicle’s base color is military sand, and it features a navy blue stripe that fades into army green.

The seals from the five U.S. military branches are displayed on the SUV’s side next to the Tempe Police Department badge.

Only officers with military experience will drive the vehicle.

“It’s our way of honoring them for their service,” Detective Greg Bacon said.

Tempe police came up with the paint scheme as a unique and creative way to start conversations in the community.

“There are a lot of service members and veterans who when they leave the military would like to serve their country continually, but on the home front and a local police department,” Bacon said. “We are also encouraging veterans to apply and become police officers.”

Tempe is accepting applications from those hopeful of becoming police officers through Jan. 29 for testing Feb. 29 or March 4.
