Tempe police use DNA evidence to link suspect to 2014 murder

PHOENIX — Tempe police have used DNA evidence to arrest a suspect accused of killing a man five years ago.

Xavier Williams, 34, is accused of fatally shooting 22-year-old Michael Perez during a home invasion robbery on Dec. 30, 2014, near Rural Road and U.S. 60.

He was booked on three counts of kidnapping and one count each of first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated robbery.

“Several of the Tempe police officers and detectives still have vivid memories of the investigation which began almost five years ago,” the department said in the release.

“The Tempe Police Department hopes this recent development will help the Perez family continue with their healing process.”

According to the Phoenix New Times, Perez was at home with his wife and 3-year-old son when the crimes occurred. The woman and child were unharmed.

The outlet reported police believed Perez was targeted for having marijuana in his home.
