PHOENIX — Cruising down the streets of Tempe, you might not recognize the latest tool unveiled by the Tempe Police Department to combat DUIs.

On Thursday, the department announced a new DUI Enforcement vehicle had been purchased through grant funding.

Funding for the vehicle was received from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for the purpose of replacing an older vehicle.

“We are extremely thankful for the continued support from GOHS and will utilize this vehicle effective immediately,” Tempe police said in a press release.

In January, Tempe police were awarded a $300,000 grant from the GOHS. The grant distributed $100,000 to programs designed to reduce the amount of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs through education and public awareness.

The department’s Covert Underage Buyer Program was issued $80,000 out of the $300,000 award.

The remaining $120,000 was distributed among programs including pedestrian and bicycle safety, traffic enforcement and collision investigation training.
