PHOENIX — A Tempe man accused of making online threats toward prominent Republicans has been arrested, authorities announced on Tuesday.
Daniel Ashpes, 24, allegedly threatened Donald Trump Jr. and Charlie Kirk, both of whom were in Tempe for a political rally last week.
The Tempe Police Department arrested Ashes last Thursday after detectives learned of his alleged threats.
How did police learn about Tempe man’s alleged online threats?
Ashpes allegedly sent the messages in response to a mass-messaging system asking him to RSVP to the rally, which was held by Kirk’s Turning Point conservative activist organization.
The police department’s threat mitigation unit immediately investigated Ashpes’ messages.
They developed probable cause for Ashpes’ arrest the same day, police said.
He was booked into the Tempe City Jail on one count of using a phone to threaten or intimidate and three counts of threatening to physically injure another person.
Ashpes allegedly admitted to making the online threats in a police interview.
