Tempe mayor Corey Woods proposes affordable housing initiative

PHOENIX – Tempe Mayor Corey Woods wants to maintain and expand affordable housing options in his East Valley suburb.

To that end, he proposed the Hometown for All initiative on Monday.

“As a longtime affordable housing advocate, I am determined to achieve a guaranteed pace of growth for our affordable and workforce housing stock,” Woods said in a press release.

“We need to take action to prioritize a sustainable revenue source that we, the city, can control.”

Under the program, 50% of certain permitting fees paid to the city by developers would be directed to the Tempe Coalition for Affordable Housing, a nonprofit affiliated with the city’s Public Housing Authority.

The coalition buys homes and maintains them as affordable housing. It expects to own 60 units by the end of the year.

The City Council will consider the Hometown for All initiative and vote on certain elements on Jan. 14, according to the release.

“I want to see Tempe go above and beyond the successes we have already seen,” Woods said. “This is about helping people in need find housing here that they can afford.”
