Tempe breaks ground on 259-room hotel next to ASU

PHOENIX – Developers broke ground Tuesday on an eight-story hotel set next door to Arizona State University’s main campus in Tempe that will carry the Hyatt name.

The 259-room hotel is part of the Novus Innovation Corridor. The Hyatt Place/Hyatt House will sit on .98 acres near Veterans Way and Sixth Street, right by Wells Fargo Arena.

The project was expected to be completed in summer 2020.

“It’s an ideal step in the transformative development of the Novus Innovation Corridor into a world-class, mixed-use urban community,” George Forristall, director of real estate development at Mortenson, said in a press release.

Catellus Development and Mortenson said the hotel would have a rooftop bar, an open lobby and a ground-level guest kitchen, among several perks.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported that Mortenson will help renovate the arena, where the Sun Devil basketball team has played since 1979.

Overall, the corridor project will take up 350 acres and be home to luxury apartments, an office complex, shops and restaurants that will stretch from near Rural Road and University Drive to Tempe Town Lake and McClintock Drive.
