Teen dead, 2 others hospitalized in multi-vehicle collision in southwest Phoenix

PHOENIX — A multi-vehicle collision in southwest Phoenix over the weekend left a teenager dead and two men hospitalized, the city’s fire department announced.

Firefighters responded to the crash near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road around 3 p.m. on Saturday and found two people who required extrication.

A 14-year-old boy named Omar Merez Hernandez died from his injuries, according to a Monday update from the Phoenix Police Department.

Two adults who were in the car with Hernandez — a man and a woman — were brought to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Phoenix Police Department found that the crash took place after the adult male driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling southbound on 35th Avenue.

The vehicle then left the roadway, colliding with a nearby pole, authorities said.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this investigation.
