Teen girl killed in weekend shooting at apartment in Avondale

A 17-year-old girl is dead after a shooting at an apartment in Avondale on Saturday morning, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A 17-year-old girl is dead after a shooting at an apartment in Avondale on Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to the Avondale Police Department, officers were dispatched to an apartment near Rancho Santa Fe Boulevard and McDowell Road for reports of a shooting around 6:27 a.m.

Police who responded to the scene reportedly found 17-year-old Rhiana Kemplin suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said Kemplin was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.

“Our hearts go out to Rhiana’s family, friends and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss,” Avondale Police Department Spokesperson Jenny Chavez said in a press release. “The Avondale Police Department extends its deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time.”

A suspect has not been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting, but the investigation is ongoing, according to police.
