15-year-old charged with murder in Phoenix mall shooting, will be tried as an adult

The 15-year-old boy arrested after a fatal shooting at Desert Sky Mall in Phoenix earlier this month will be tried as an adult, authorities announced Thursday.

Guillermo Guzman was indicted on one count of second-degree murder, four counts of aggravated assault and one count of disorderly conduct, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s office.

The June 2 shooting left 17-year-old Kevin Zamora dead and an unnamed 16-year-old victim injured, prosecutors said.

Officers found the two victims while responding to the indoor shopping center at 75th Avenue and Thomas Road about 8:20 p.m.

Guzman allegedly pulled out a gun and fired after getting verbal altercation with a group of people at the mall, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police identified him as the suspect by reviewing surveillance footage and other investigative methods before arresting him at his home without incident a few days after the shooting.

His secured appearance bond was set at $1 million.
