Suspicious package at Phoenix garage found to be harmless

PHOENIX — First responders in Phoenix investigated a suspicious package in a city garage Tuesday morning, but nothing hazardous was found.

Captain Jake Van Hook with the Phoenix Fire Department said crews were dispatched for a “hazardous materials situation” involving an envelope containing an unknown white powder.

The man who opened the envelope was monitored for more than an hour and was found to be in stable condition. He was not taken to the hospital.

The white powder was sent to a state lab for further evaluation.

At 10:30 a.m., the Phoenix Fire Department tweeted that the area at Third Avenue and Washington Street was safe but remained under investigation.

Nearly three hours later, the city of Phoenix tweeted that the situation was resolved.

The garage was closed and Washington Street was restricted during the investigation.
