PHOENIX — Three people were taken into custody on Wednesday after leading authorities on a short car chase that ended when one suspect fled on foot and jumped into the Salt River.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said in an email that the pursuit involved a vehicle with fake registration tags that had failed to yield.
Two suspects, who were only identified as males, fled on foot near the U.S. 60 and Greenfield Road in Mesa.
One of the suspects was taken into custody shortly after, while the other was taken into custody after swimming in the Salt River.

A woman who was in the vehicle with the suspects told troopers that she was kidnapped, but Graves said the woman just chose not to run from the vehicle and was not a kidnapping victim.
No further details were given.
