Suspect transported to hospital after being shot by Phoenix police

PHOENIX — One suspect was transported to a local hospital in serious condition Wednesday after being shot by Phoenix police, authorities said.

A woman, later identified as 22 year-old Hannah Kyyitan, who had the been subject of a mental health call near 48th Street and Ray Road answered an apartment door carrying a shotgun around 5 p.m., Sgt. Ann Justus said.

After ignoring commands to drop the weapon, Justus told KTAR News 92.3 FM the woman raised the shotgun and pointed it at an officer.

The officer fired, hitting the woman.

Her injuries were not life-threatening, Justus said.

The incident began with the phone call to mental health care workers. A roommate said the woman had a knife and was threatening to hurt herself and others. The mental health workers then called police, Justus said.

Police arrived and tried to make contact with the woman, whose roommate was outside with the mental health workers. When a shot went off inside the apartment, officer began to evacuate neighbors.

Kyyitan was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of aggravated assault.

It was the 12th shooting of the year involving Phoenix police, according to KTAR News research.
